How to Read IRCTC PNR Status: Complete Guide to CNF, RAC, WL, GNWL, RLWL, PQWL & Confirmation Chances
Complete guide to Indian Railways PNR status codes: CNF, RAC, WL, GNWL, RLWL, PQWL, TQWL, and RSWL. How waitlist confirmation priority works.
The Anatomy of a 10-Digit PNR Number
Every confirmed, RAC, or waitlisted ticket booked through IRCTC or railway counters generates a unique 10-digit Passenger Name Record (PNR).
The first 3 digits indicate the Passenger Reservation System (PRS) server zone where the booking transaction originated:
- 2, 3: Northern Zone (Delhi PRS - NR, NCR, NWR, NER)
- 4, 5: Western Zone (Mumbai PRS - CR, WR, WCR, SECR)
- 6, 7: Southern Zone (Chennai PRS - SR, SWR, SCR)
- 8, 9: Eastern Zone (Kolkata PRS - ER, ECR, SER, ECOR, NFR)
Master Table of IRCTC Booking Status Codes
| Status Code | Full Form | Passenger Rights & Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| CNF | Confirmed | Full berth reserved. Coach and berth number allotted. |
| RAC | Reservation Against Cancellation | Guaranteed boarding. 2 RAC passengers share 1 Side Lower berth. |
| GNWL | General Waitlist | Highest confirmation chances. Originating station to end station. |
| RLWL | Remote Location Waitlist | Moderate confirmation. Booked between intermediate stations. |
| PQWL | Pooled Quota Waitlist | Lowest confirmation priority. Shared across small intermediate stations. |
| TQWL | Tatkal Waitlist | Directly moves to CNF only if Tatkal cancellations occur. |
Waitlist Quota Hierarchy: GNWL vs RLWL vs PQWL
Indian Railways follows a strict hierarchy when passenger cancellations free up confirmed berths during chart preparation:
- GNWL (General Waitlist): Confirmed first! When any passenger travelling from train origin cancels, GNWL moves up.
- RLWL (Remote Location): Has an independent quota for major intermediate towns. Clears second.
- PQWL (Pooled Quota): Clears last, as pooled quota has very small reserved allocations.
Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) Rules & Privileges
If your final charted status is RAC, you are legally entitled to board the train and travel. Two RAC passengers share a single Side Lower (SL) berth as seating accommodation. If any confirmed passenger in that coach fails to show up (No-Show) or cancels after chart preparation, the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) upgrades the RAC passenger to a full sleeping berth.
How to Gauge Waitlist Confirmation Probability
Check your live status on the SolveKits PNR Status Tool. If GNWL is under 30 in Sleeper class or under 15 in 3rd AC on non-peak dates, confirmation probability typically exceeds 85%.
